The fact is, I have an opinion.

You know, Joseph Walter got me to thinking. He expressed on his tumblr, “The Omnipotent Joe’s Irrefutable Reviews,” how he views film. He doesn’t analyze cinematography, he doesn’t fawn over directors, and he doesn’t believe independent films are better than mainstream, simply because they’re independent. What makes a good film for him is how much he enjoys it. I have to agree with that. Everyone else can talk about a film’s deeper meaning, how it affects the world, how it utilizes film techniques A, B and C, but I don’t care.

If a movie entertains me, then I’m satisfied. I won’t say it’s good or bad, because that leaves room for people to tell me I’m wrong. Saying “It entertains ME, so I PERSONALLY like it,” shouldn’t be a problem for anyone else. If you think that’s naive, because I’m refusing to hear why I shouldn’t like it, then answer me this: Where, in the sentence, “I like this film,” do you hear “Your opinion is wrong” ? Don’t get me wrong. When I say, “I like it,” I have no problem with you telling me why you didn’t like it. Discussion is a wonderful thing. It’s when you say I’m wrong that you lose me. That’s like saying I’m wrong when I tell you I have a nose. Sure, you CAN disagree, but arguing a fact is stupid (unless you’re joking). You will never be right. I know we like things based on our opinions, but the FACT that we like things is… well, a fact. Why I like a movie has to do with my opinion, but… screw it. I’m talking in circles. You get the idea. You’re not idiots. ;)

  1. Character is very importnat to all things movies. From the characters being portrayed on film to the people behind the scenes, one’s character helps to define the outcome. Then there’s the character of the reviewer. Can a reviewer have character? Heck yes if they want to be read and taken seriously as opposed to reading script (that may or may not be provided). I don’t know what the shooting of the the film was like but I am certain that certain characters on set and off the set helped to define what type of movie was put out.

I don’t know if that is what happened to Scott Pilgrim but it sounds like it was a movie that was made using the top seven buzzwords at the time. Video games being central to it. I will want to see the movie for myself before I render my opinion on the movie but I do applaud your friend for having character of his own in his review.

I find it interesting and sorry for jumping paragraphs here but I just noticed that I said the movie was “put out” rather than the movie was made. I guess that is a statement right there.

I still want to see Scott Pilgrim if only because of the hype that your friend spoke of. As a gamer and one you might remember blogged a few times from a Screening Room on movies that had a video game basis or connection.

Now that I htink about it, I still need to find a copy of “Gamer” as that one has some interesting philosophical posits that I have been exploring.

Tell your frind that I enjoyed his review of this movie that I have yet to see so I don’t know if he is crazy just yet. ;)

  2. Wait, I made another blog entry? Oh yeah… I forgot.
